Christian Marriage
Christian marriage is a wonderful institution, but it can be difficult as well. Christian marriages can sometimes be worse than non-Christian marriages. That “wives submit and respect” message is a killer! To top it off, instead of making vows before a judge, we do it before God; therefore, we as believers, must work doubly hard to end up with an Outrageously Happy Christian marriage! As we know, Christians like everybody else can have a horrible marriage if it is not set on a good foundation. This is something that, unfortunately, we have experienced firsthand. We are Joel and Kathy Davisson.Even though I, Joel, was a pastor, I treated my wife in horrible ways. Not only was I both spiritually and mentally abusive, but at one point I even fell into adultery. The spiritual abuse was the worse. I would tell her, “I am the head of this home. You must submit to me! Your lack of submission is rebellion and rebellion is the same as witchcraft – so you are being a WITCH right now!” That really helped. Not. She would get more hurt and angry and fight back and I would say, “You have a Jezebel spirit!” I was convinced, but I was wrong!
By the time the adultery happened I figured things were over. I wrote a letter to Kathy, informing her that I was divorcing her and of how to handle matters with the church. Things never came to this however; thankfully I was confronted by a man who convinced me that I was the problem. It was a long and difficult road back to a happy marriage, but my wife was supportive and with me every step of the way. Thanks to her and God we are now in an outrageously happy Christian marriage and wonder of wonders, God has dropped us into the middle of a marriage ministry 14 years later! That ministry is now worldwide!
God’s intervention in our life wasn’t just to save our marriage, but to save Christian marriages all over the world.
